Row for Ireland - Eligibility

Rowing Ireland is recognised by FISA as the governing body for the sport of rowing in Ireland. The Rowing Ireland High Performance programme seeks to build a successful performance programme aligned with the whole rowing community on the island of Ireland. We will invest without favour in athletes from any part of Ireland who demonstrate both the standards and motivation to row for Ireland, representing their communities with pride. In return, we expect our athletes to commit their rowing future to our community, the Rowing Ireland community. Be Proud - ROW IRELAND!

To row for Ireland at a FISA event an athlete must hold an Irish passport via Irish Citizenship or hold a British passport that shows the holder to have been born in Northern Ireland.

Under the terms of a long-standing settlement between  the Olympic Council of Ireland and the British Olympic Association, athletes from Northern Ireland can elect to represent Ireland at the Olympics, as Northern Irish people are legally entitled to Irish citizenship.

Who can be an Irish citizen?

In general a person acquires Irish citizenship through one of the following ways:

  • by descent if one of his or her parents was an Irish citizen at the time of the person's birth;
  • by marriage to an Irish citizen
  • by naturalisation
